Reflection Paper:
Going into the course, I was clueless and had a lot of things going on. The flow is not as smooth as it were last term, maybe because the fast pace had me breathless. Despite the mentioned problems, it is interesting to learn concepts that would ultimately help a real organization, one that I am a part of. This must be why, somehow, the concepts came together.
Dominica is a small island. It would be easy to pinpoint which school I am referring to if somebody would come here to investigate. However, I decided to give the school a different name, a mix of the real name (Convent Prep) and the name of another existing primary school, (Roseau Primary).
Human Performance Improvement, at first, seemed like an impossible task to come up with all alone. Even the examples given show a group of people working together to come up with the best intervention. How would I, someone new to primary school teaching, be able to improve the practices of a primary school that has been established for several decades? A recent development, however, showed that maybe being new is an advantage. Some teachers are complaining about practices being the same throughout the years. Why can’t new but improved practices be implemented? These questions coming from my co-teachers convinced me that something should be done. Second grade Mathematics is just the beginning of what could be a greater human improvement project in the whole school.
Interestingly, and not due to an initiative of mine, the primary school has conducted a series of meetings on Mathematics teaching as a whole, but with a significant focus on Grade Two Mathematics. This confirms my take that this is an urgent cause that the whole school sees as such.
In the end, I am happy to report that this case study is helping me resolve real-life issues at the school I am working in. I have to admit there are still some aspects of human performance technology or improvement that I need to brush up on. Looking at some of the concepts at a slower pace during the course of the summer may help me better fulfill the plans that I had made in this case study.
