My name is Jabel Erica Odiamar-Bercasio. I was born in Naga City, Philippines on the 8th of July, 1981. My dad, an obstetrician-gynecologist, found a job in Dominica in 1993. Two years later, my mom, my younger brother and I joined him.
After college in 2001, I went off to university in the Philippines. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Digital Illustration and Animation in 2006. I got married the following year.
In 2008, I started taking Masters of Mathematics. I finished 18 units but my pregnancy halted my quest for the degree. When I got back to graduate studies in 2010, I enrolled into MFA in Creative Writing instead. In 2013, I took a Professional Certification exam in Autodesk Maya and passed.
I was about to defend my final thesis in 2015 when we had to move back to Dominica due to a robbery at my parents’ house. My transition from university instructor to primary school teacher prompted me to take a course that will aid me in teaching. I was originally advised to take a teaching certification course, but I opted for a Master’s degree.
This is why I am here, near the end of my MsC in Instructional Design and Technology, hoping that circumstances will shine on me this time and let me finish this degree in particular. I had already experienced a delay due to Hurricane Maria, which struck our island on the 18th of September of 2017. A hardworking graduate student since 2008, I really hope that this time the blood, sweat and tears will pay off. I am a willing and voracious learner.
